Curro hosts major athletics event in Pretoria

Curro Hazeldean will host the Curro Podium Athletics North meeting on 18 September at Pilditch Stadium in Pretoria. This popular event, which is partnered by Athletics Gauteng North and approved by Athletics South Africa, will bring together some of the best young athletes in the region to push themselves to the limit.

Spotlight on rising athletes

Now in its second year, the Curro Podium Series offers a platform for future South African athletes to excel. Among them is Bayanda Walaza, a Curro Hazeldean matric learner, who earned a silver medal at the Paris Olympics as part of South Africa’s 4x100m relay team. Bayanda also claimed two gold medals in the 100m and 200m at the World U20 Championships in Peru.

Other standout athletes include Tumi Ramokgopa, a semi-finalist in the 400m hurdles, and Njabulo Mabatha, who placed fourth in the 400m hurdles at the World Championships. Their presence at the Curro Podium North meeting will undoubtedly inspire fellow competitors to give it their all.

Future stars in the making

Cindy van der Merwe, Portfolio Manager at Curro Sport, emphasised the importance of the event: ‘The Curro Podium Series is a breeding ground for future stars. Many of our competitors have gone on to shine at international events like the World U20 Championships, such as Timeke-Jade Coetzee, Temoso Masikane, Kailje Botje and Chane Vermeulen to name a few.’
