Curro Parkdene karate athlete wins double gold at WUKF event

Across three disciplines and against international opposition, Callum Kal-El Henry delivered a complete performance. The Curro Parkdene Academy karateka secured two gold medals and a silver at the 2026 WUKF SA Championships and Afro-Asia Open in Gqeberha.

Competing against athletes from countries including South Africa, Namibia, Mauritius, Réunion, Scotland and the United States, Callum secured first place in Kata and Rotational Kumite, along with second place in Kumite.

Three disciplines, three podium finishes

Karate competition at this level demands range. Kata focuses on precise execution of forms, while Kumite tests timing, control and decision-making in sparring. Rotational Kumite adds a team element, requiring athletes to adapt across multiple bouts.

Callum’s results reflect that range. The school confirmed his achievements, noting he ‘managed to first place in following and brought home Gold and Silver medals’ with ‘1st Kata, 1st Rotational Kumite, 2nd Kumite’.

Built over years on the mat

Callum’s development began early. The school shared that from the tender age of just 4 years old, Callum began his Karate journey, adding that what started as a young child stepping onto the Karate mat has grown into an inspiring journey.

His progression through the belt system, now at brown belt, and experience across more than 20 competitions have shaped a consistent competitive profile.

Composure in competition

Success across both forms and sparring highlights control under pressure. Kata requires accuracy and rhythm, while Kumite demands reaction speed and tactical awareness against live opponents.

The school described this balance, noting that ‘the moment he steps onto the Karate mat, another side of him emerges, A fearless, determined competitor’.
