A rising star
Thato’s talent shone brightly at various school events, including MADD Evenings and Awards Ceremonies. Her personality and powerful performances quickly made her a name to take note of in the school community. According to Evelyn Mitchell, Primary School Head of Arts and Culture, ‘Thatohatsi first captivated my attention at the tender age of six with her extraordinary singing voice. It was clear from that early moment that her vibrant personality matched her impressive vocal talent, and it was evident she was born for the spotlight.’
Overcoming challenges
Thato’s journey continued in high school, where she didn’t let challenges hold her back. During the Grade 7 lockdown year, she joined the high school choir and earned a role in the musical Annie, portraying President Roosevelt. Last year, despite a personal injury, she returned to the stage in Click This! The Story of Miriam Makeba – Mama Afrika, delivering a captivating performance of ‘Last Night of the World’ from Miss Saigon.
‘Thato’s dedication and passion have always set her apart. Her ability to engage the audience and bring characters to life is truly special,” said Zenda Smith, High School Dramatic Arts teacher. ‘This year, she took on the challenging role of Shakespeare in the musical Dane of Thrones. Her powerful delivery of a three-page monologue and a moving rendition of “Seasons of Love” from Rent left the audience and cast members in tears.’
A dream come true
Years of dedication finally lead to an extraordinary opportunity – performing on Broadway in The Lion King. ‘We are incredibly proud of Thato and excited to see where her journey takes her,’ said Zenda.
