Grade R at Curro
Bridging the gap through play
Grade R is a pivotal year that forms the foundation for future success in school and, later on, life. At Curro, we understand that young learners still need to connect what they learn in theory with what they learn in their tangible reality. This is why our approach to the curriculum involves multi-sensory play and focuses on the child as a whole, but still with a layer of formal learning.
Why is Grade R so important?
Grade R is not Grade 1 in miniature. Instead, it bridges the gap between learners discovering the world with their bodies and senses, and being ready for the more formal learning that starts in Grade 1.
At Curro, we believe in building a strong foundation in Grade R through the following:
- Physical development improves core body strength, balance and the necessary coordination for learners’ bodies to be comfortable during longer school days.
- We support emotional growth for learners to confidently become self-aware, resilient, and independent.
- While playing with their friends, learners develop social skills such as cooperative play and communication.
- Cognitive readiness is the aspect that lays the foundation for academic success, which we support through emergent reading, problem-solving and early math awareness.

What is a play-based approach?
Anything learned through play at a young age is remembered much faster and more efficiently when compared to anything learned while sitting at a table in a forced learning environment. Our innovative approach balances structured activities with playful exploration.
Tools such as Six Bricks use six different coloured blocks that learners can use for a myriad of activities. By playing with these blocks, learners can discover counting, stacking (building), creatively connecting or forming shapes with the blocks, concentration, and more. All of this enhances critical thinking, creativity and logical problem-solving (or, as we call it, computational thinking).
This is just one of the many tools we use to provide our learners with a strong foundation that support success in their future learning.
